2 Barrel Jeans We Can't Stop Wearing: Tori-X and Shon

There are two cuts of denim doing all the work this season. Tori-X from Closed and Shon from Nili Lotan. Both barrel jeans but with distinct silhouettes that are the foundation of Fall 2026.

These jeans are sisters not twins - one is the quiet, long-hemmed pair you'll pull on with boots all season. The other stops at the ankle and has a little more to say. Here's how to tell them apart...and why you'll want both.

First things first: let's define a barrel jean.

A barrel jean sits at the waist, eases out through the hip and thigh, then curves back in toward the ankle. Just picture the elongated shape of an actual barrel. A shape that is as comfortable as a wide and as flattering as a tailored trouser.

The appeal is the a structured yet immensely comfortable pair of jeans. After a couple of years in rotation, barrel jeans have settled in as a real closet staple. It's a shape a lot of people are nervous about until they try one on. Then they get it.

What Makes the Closed Tori-X Different?

Closed was started by French designers Marithé and François Girbaud, and the Tori-X is still cut from Italian denim and made in Italy. You can feel it the second you pick them up.

It's a mid-rise barrel with a full-length leg and the brand's signature "X" detailing at the front pockets. The curve is subtle. From across the room it almost reads like a relaxed straight leg, and you only notice the shape when you move. That longer hem is the whole point: it's made to slide right over a boot.

At Coco Goose we carry the Tori-X in a few washes. The Mid Blue is the everyday pair, and the Dark Blue comes in a 32" inseam if you're tall and tired of barrel jeans turning into accidental capris. The Ecru is our sleeper pick for fall. Winter white denim with a camel coat is about as good as cold weather dressing gets.

One fit note: some Tori-X washes are rigid with zero stretch. They'll feel snug for the first few wears and then mold to you.

What Makes the Nili Lotan Shon Different?

The Shon is one of Nili Lotan's signature pants, and it comes in everything from corduroy to leather. The jean version is the one we can't keep on the shelves.

It's made in the U.S.A. from Japanese stretch denim, with washes finished by hand for that worn-in vintage feel. It sits high on the waist, curves out through the leg and tapers to an ankle-length hem. The detail that gives it personality is the seaming at the knee. That darting is what creates the shape, so the curve is built in rather than just cut in. Topstitched patch pockets front and back finish it off with a slightly utilitarian edge.

Because it's stretch denim, the Shon is comfortable from day one. No break-in period required.

Tori-X or Shon: Which Barrel Jean Is Right for You?

Think about what's on your feet most days.

If your fall uniform is boots and a long coat, start with the Tori-X. The softer curve makes it the easier entry point if you're new to barrel jeans, and it's the pair you'll wear on autopilot.

If you live in loafers or a slim ankle boot, go with the Shon. The cropped length shows a bit of ankle, and the knee seaming makes a plain sweater look like an outfit. It's also a great pick if you're petite, since a cropped barrel draws the eye to the narrowest part of your leg instead of swallowing you.

How Do You Style Barrel Jeans for Fall?

For the Tori-X, tuck in a fine-gauge knit and add a long wool coat with a heeled ankle boot. The Ecru looks especially sharp with brown, so pull out every chocolate and camel piece you own. A leather jacket works too, and Who What Wear is betting big on leather this season.

For the Shon, the move is a loafer and a peek of sock. It sounds fussy. It isn't. A ribbed sock in cream or grey turns that little gap between hem and shoe into the best part of the outfit. Add a big-buckle belt and a black crewneck and you're done.
