The New Western: How the Cool Girl Wears It Now

The cowboy vibe is back. But not the rhinestones-and-a-ten-gallon-hat of the past version. This fall it's quieter and a little worn in, ultra luxe, and easier to pull off.

Think one great western piece, like a pearl-snap denim shirt, a fringed cashmere scarf, or a suede jacket that's gone soft at the elbows, thrown on with stuff you already own. It's what we keep pulling for clients at Coco Goose, and it's what we're wearing ourselves.

The New Western Trend

If you needed permission, Who What Wear handed it over to the industry this year: "Western fashion is so back." Rodeo belts showed up on the Dior and Celine runways, and a buttery-yellow Ralph Lauren fringe jacket pretty much took over everyone's feed last fall. They also spotted a softer western romance at Brandon Maxwell and Gabriela Hearst, which they're calling "the Yellowstone effect." We're seeing so many nods to this nostalgic style on runways and ready-to-wear alike.

The Western Denim Shirt: How to Wear our Go-To

If you buy one thing, make it a denim shirt. It's our go-to for every look but it works especially well as a western foundation. For fall 2026, look for a deep indigo that'll fade in its own time but look luxe forever. Then wear it like any button-down you love, open over a white tank or tucked into a suede skirt with a good belt.

TWP Yellowstone Resin Buttondown

The TWP Yellowstone Shirt in Indigo Resin is the one we keep reaching for right now. She's new and we're obsessed. It's crisp enough for dinner and broken in enough for a Saturday at the barn. Want it moodier? The Lone Rider Shirt in Darkest Spruce swaps indigo for a deep forest green that looks so good with brown suede.

And yes, you can do double denim. Just don't match your washes. Throw a dark shirt over a lighter jean like the Nili Lotan Shon Jean in Cienna Wash, or grab a jacket instead. The Closed Denim Jacket with Shearling Collar has that ranch-hand shape plus a collar you'll want to live in, and the Z Supply Daily Sherpa Denim Jacket is the easy, everyday option.

Full Fringe for Fall 2026

Fringe is here, but it's all grown up. Sophisticated, not gimmicky. This season's fringe swishes when you walk instead of shouting from across the room. Think a fringed scarf or a cozy wrap, not a full rhinestone-cowgirl jacket.

TWP Fringe Triangle Scarf

Start with the TWP Fringe Triangle Scarf in Blue Nights. Tie it at your neck over a crewneck, or toss it over a camel coat. It comes in Light Heather Grey too, if you like things softer.

Ready to go bigger? The Autumn Cashmere Southwest Fringed Shawl Collar Throw in Brownie Combo is a blanket you're allowed to wear in public. Pair it with jeans and flat boots and call it a day.

Suede is the Fabric of The New Western Frontier

Suede will always be a must-have for the Coco Goose girl, western or not. But it's undoubtedly the perfect textile for this trend. Who What Wear put it perfectly this fall: "suede is no longer reserved for the country-western-coded halls of Yellowstone." Wear it with a tee and jeans or over a slip dress. It just keeps getting better with every wear.

Jakett Shania Suede Fringe Jacket

Right now we're obsessed with the Jakett Shania Washed Suede Jacket in Twilight. It already looks a little faded and loved, which is exactly the point. Want something sharper? The Veronica Beard Walters Suede Jacket in Blue Steel is a surprise color that's amazing with dark denim. And the Closed Goatskin Country Jacket in Sand Beige is the neutral you'll still be wearing in ten years.

Finish Off The Look

First, boots. There's nothing like a classic western inspired boot. It pairs effortlessly with any denim from boot cut to barrel. A suede cowboy boot does most of the work here, and the THE GREAT. Cowboy Boot Suede in Tan is the pair we'd hand anyone who's nervous about making it all work. It looks right with a wide-leg jean and just as good with a midi dress. Not a cowboy boot person? The Frye Campus 12R in Tan Buck has been a cult favorite forever, and the Rag & Bone Newbury Suede Chelsea Boot in Dark Chocolate gives you the suede but is versatile enough to be worn with a black dress or denim and fringe.

Then, something at your neck. The Guest in Residence Wild Rag in Highland/Burnt Cocoa is basically a cashmere cowboy bandana. Tie it tight over a crewneck or loose over your denim shirt. Feeling bold? The Grizzly Cowhide Wild Rag goes full cow print, which is quietly showing up everywhere.

Finish with a big buckle. Rodeo belts were all over the runways this year, and a good one makes a plain jean and tee look like you meant it.

What makes western style feel luxe instead of outdoorsy?

Here's the thing about the new western: you shouldn't look like you just came in from the pasture. It's all in the materials. Think buttery suede and goatskin, with cashmere where you'd expect cotton. The shape is borrowed from the ranch, but the craftsmanship is pure luxury.

Nobody does this better than TWP. Their Yellowstone and Lone Rider shirts take the classic snap-front work shirt and cut it so precisely it feels like tailoring, and the fringe scarves come in the softest fabrics you'll ever wrap around your neck. Nili Lotan plays the same game from the other direction. The Shon is a utilitarian pant at heart, but rendered in suede, it's one of the most quietly expensive things you can own.

Alix of Bohemia Court Indigo Fringe Jacket

The rest of the Coco Goose favorites follow suit. The Alix of Bohemia Court Indigo Night Jacket is a chore coat that belongs at a gallery opening. Ulla Johnson's crochet-and-leather skirt is the kind of handwork that takes hours, and you can tell. Even the bandana gets an upgrade, since Guest in Residence knits its wild rags in cashmere.

That's the whole secret. Keep the silhouettes simple and let the fabrics be the luxury, in warm shades of chocolate and indigo. It reads western without a single cactus in sight.

What to Wear in Jackson Hole

Jackson is the real deal, so lean in, just don't overdo it. Days are for denim and suede, and nights are for a saddle stool at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. Pack the TWP Yellowstone Shirt with your darkest Nili Lotan Shon Jean, and throw the Habitual Denim Shearling Coat over both when the temperature drops after sunset (it will). A cashmere wild rag keeps your neck warm and quietly tells everyone you know what you're doing. Boots should be broken in before you land. Trust us. Shop an alternative look below.

What to Wear in Aspen

Aspen wants the western look a little shinier. Think suede and cashmere, polished enough for dinner in town and cozy enough for après. The Veronica Beard Walters Suede Jacket over a cream turtleneck is the move, with the Rag & Bone Newbury Chelsea Boot for walking around town. For nights, the Nili Lotan Shon Suede Pant with a fitted black knit says "I ski" without making you prove it. And wrap yourself in the Autumn Cashmere fringed throw on the gondola. You'll be the best-dressed person in the cabin. Shop an alternative look below.

What to Wear in Big Sky

Big Sky is where the Yellowstone fantasy meets serious ski-town money, so the look lands right in the middle. Rugged enough for Montana, refined enough that you could wander into a private club and fit right in. Start with the Closed Goatskin Country Jacket, a jacket built for exactly this kind of place. Layer it over the TWP Lone Rider Shirt in Darkest Spruce, because that deep forest green looks like it was made for the mountains. Add the L'Agence Jair Cardigan for fireside nights and the Frye Campus 12R in Brownie for everything else. Finish with a TWP fringe scarf, and you're dressed for the lodge and the drive home under all those stars. An alternative look below.
